I repeated this after another 6 hours, the dialogue box still said "starting up." and more content had transferred. I waited 3-4 hours and when nothing happened I quit and when reopened I noticed that content had been moved but it was far from complete. It would help if there was an indication what percentage was complete. Bottom line, once you get to the "starting up." point you are golden since at this point content should be transferring. First of all the transfer took several days mainly due to impatience, stubburness, and not being very good with computers. Just finished transferring from a 2014 MacAir to a new one and I hope my comments might help. Hopefully this will work for others as well. Once I returned to that screen I saw progress and estimate to completion. So my accidental solution was to click "back" button and go back towards beginning of the setup without actually canceling the transfer that most likely was already in progress even when the screen was NOT showing progress. Now the process is going smoothly and I will finish in about 30 mins according to the screen. I was very relieved as this is what I would expect from Apple, not a screen that gives back no information. It was showing how many files were copied, showed the progress bar and also estimated time to completion. Once I clicked thru those new screens I did not see before and set passwords, I got back to the screen where data was copied.
(again, I did not see that screen during the initial setup) When I clicked back, I actually came to the screen that was NOT showing initially during the initial setup, where I had to set passwords for all users that are being created from a backup.Īlso, saw a screen where I had to chose actual directories I want to copy. click on the "back" button that appeared after I clicked on "cancel" after reading this tread, I decided to stop the process and maybe restart it. and process started with "starting up" screen and was there all night and half of the next day. got to the screen that asked me to chose the disc "time machine" connected via thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2 adaptor.Ĭlicked the disk with my backup on it.

got to this thread by having the same issue "stuck on starting up".īought a new M1 mac mini and started setting it up last night.
